Cheryl Sessions

Cheryl Shaffer Sessions, 63, died peacefully at her home in Spring, Texas on July 7, 2022, surrounded by her loving husband of 35 years, family and friends. Cheryl fought a three-year battle with cancer, sustained by the tender care of her family and friends and strengthened by her faith in her Savior, Jesus Christ. Born Shreveport, Louisiana on January 12, 1959 to James Travis Shaffer and Jean Ruffin Shaffer, Cheryl graduated from C.E. Byrd High School in 1976 and from the University of Southwestern Louisiana (ULL) in Lafayette, Louisiana, in 1980. In Lafayette, she met the Shreveport boy who became the love of her life. She and William N. (Bill) Sessions, Jr. were married on September 27, 1986, lived in Lafayette for a short while, then moved to Longview, Texas. During their two years in Longview, they were blessed with two sons, William Travis and Jared Thomas. In 1990, they were transferred to Houston (Spring) where they have lived for over thirty years. Cheryl’s love for her family as a wife and mother gave her great pleasure as she actively participated in her sons’ activities while in the Klein School District and also during their college years at Texas A&M University. Her numerous activities in church and community events added great pleasure and many new friends to the Sessions family. She especially relished the role of “consummate hostess” as evidenced by the many friends and acquaintances she made from church and community activities. While accompanying Bill on some of his overseas trips for work, Cheryl was bitten by the travel bug and began planning trips for her family. Later, when everyone saw what a talent she had preparing a vacation down to the smallest detail, she shared her skills as a wonderful travel guide with her friends, delighting in the places they visited. Even in the midst of her illness and a pandemic, she and Bill continued to travel with family and friends. Cheryl had a true gift of volunteering and especially enjoyed her theatre activities in Houston at the Hobby Center and the Alley Theatre. In the spirit of Will Rogers, Cheryl never saw a show she didn’t like. She especially enjoyed Broadway shows, making her last trip to New York City in January to celebrate her 63rd birthday. She also volunteered with Cypress-Woodlands Junior Forum, Northwest Assistance Ministries, DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) and others. Cheryl also enjoyed participating in numerous Bible studies through the years. She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Bill, her sons, Will (Ariana) and Jared; two grandsons, Hayden and Cameron; sister, Cindy Barry (David); brother, Jimmy Shaffer (Kate); brother-in-law, Louis Sessions (Cheryl); sisters-in-law, Julie Snodgrass (Bob) and Jennifer Shannon (Mike); stepsister, Janet Baker (Jim); stepbrother, Randall Nichols (Gina); numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Jean Shaffer Nichols and Travis Shaffer, and her stepfather, Billy G. Nichols. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Sunday, July 17, 4:00 p.m. at Northwest Bible Church (5503 Fellowship Lane, Spring, TX 77379). The family will receive visitors at the church after the celebration. Memorials in Cheryl’s memory may be made to Northwest Assistance Ministries (namonline.org) and the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation (cholangiocarcinoma.org).
