Dennis George Holmgren

Dennis George Holmgren passed away peacefully on January 11 at the age of 89. We find comfort knowing that he is resting in the arms of our Savior. Dennis was born in Chicago, IL to the late George and Hazel Holmgren. He had a successful career in retail sales management, retiring from Sears, Roebuck and Company after 37 years. Dennis spent another 12 years at Sunnyland Furniture and Foleys Department Store before fully retiring to spend more time with grandchildren and volunteering. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War, serving with the military police, where his loyalty and dependability continued to be an asset in his professional career and community service work. Dennis lived in Houston, Texas for over 45 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Holmgren, as well as his sisters Dolores Holmgren Dwyer and Carol Holmgren Vroegh. Although he traveled regularly for work, Dennis always made time for activities of his children and grandchildren: soccer games, scouting, graduations, and holiday gatherings in Houston. Dennis and Phyllis were active members at Resurrection Lutheran Church of Spring, Texas where they both loved to worship, volunteer, and see lifelong friends. While at Resurrection Lutheran Church, Dennis served in many roles such as Deacon, teaching Vacation Bible School, and volunteering with their Spanish literacy ministry for many years. He was a 10-year volunteer with Meals on Wheels who worked alongside his good friend Wayne Tinsley. He also was the devoted caregiver for his wife Phyllis during the last 10 years of her life following a stroke. Dennis is survived by his oldest daughter Paula and husband Randall Rhea; his youngest daughter Linda and husband David Brown; and son Brad Holmgren, as well as five grandchildren Karin Brown, Wayne Brown, Joseph Brown, Carlin Rhea and Nelson Rhea along with many other nieces, nephews, and cherished family members and friends. The family would like to express gratitude to friends Pastor Steve Sohns, Jack Waters and Ron Robinson as well as the caring staff at Paradise Springs/Holiday Retirement and You’re First for their compassion and friendship. A celebration of life service will be conducted in the future. Dennis will be interred next to his loving wife, Phyllis, in the Houston National Cemetery.
