Dorothy Ann Tate

Dorothy Ann Tate (nee O'Shaughnessy), left this earth Wednesday, May 16th 2018. She was born August 14th, 1941 in Brooklyn, New York, where she was the 4th of 5 children. Her parents were Dorothy Helen (Carroll) O'Shaughnessy & Harold Francis O'Shaughnessy. Dot, as she was called, along with her 4 children, moved to Houston, Texas from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1970. She was a devoted wife to James R. Tate for 44 years, with whom she helped run their family business for many years. She was preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy O'Shaughnessy, her brother Raymond O'Shaughnessy, her sister Jeanne Silva, her brother Michael O'Shaughnessy, her son Robert William Slook and other relatives. She is survived by her loving husband Jim, and her brother Hal O'Shaughnessy. Dot had two sets of twins, and she is also survived by 3 of her children: Denise McCage & her husband Larry, Michelle Ridgway & her husband Jon, Ed Slook & his wife Heather. In addition, she leaves behind 10 grandchildren: Nicholas & Sean Ridgway, Katherine Ridgway Rivet, Ryan, Miranda, Nathan, Collin & Molly McCage, Blake & Haley Slook and 4 great-grandsons: Aiden Ridgway, Brennan Rivet, Shiloh Ridgway & Auron McCage. Dot's interests & talents were many. She loved to visit with her siblings & children, garden, ski, dance, cook, decorate her home, celebrate holidays- especially Halloween, Christmas & Easter, make jewelry, read novels & poetry, play cards & Farkle, watch NCIS and she loved her coffee! Her favorite poems were "I Have a Little Shadow" by Robert Louis Stevenson and "Footsteps in the Sand". She also loved music, & would often have music playing at home, especially songs from the 50's-70's including artists like Johnny Mathis, Barbara Streisand, Nat King Cole, Bobby Darin, Frank Sinatra, Paul Anka, Jim Croce & Gordon Lightfoot. Some of her favorite songs were "Put your head on my shoulder", "I'll be seeing you" and "Wonderful, wonderful". She always found time to sing & read to her two sets of twins & later to her grandchildren. Dot was determined that all her children be college educated, thus her three surviving children all earned their degrees, something of which she was extremely proud. Dot loved being surrounded by family, especially her grandchildren, for whom she had a deep & abiding love. When she was not able to see them, she would always say, "Give them a kiss from me and tell them I love them". She will be fondly remembered for her beauty, her compassion for all God's children, her intelligence, her sharp wit, her cooking, her gardening & decorating skills, her creativity & jewelry-making skills, her strength of will & love and most of all-her kindness. A memorial will be held at her son Ed's home Sunday, May 27th from 2-4 p.m. In her memory, since she loved books & said "I love the smell of a library", please donate a book in memoriam to your local or school library. Rest in peace dear lady, mother, wife & grandmother, for you are without pain now, and we will meet in Heaven.
