Peyton Russell Smith

Peyton Russell Smith was born in Houston March 1, 1954, to Pleasant Bogan Smith and Carolyn Draper Smith. He attended Houston Christian School, then enrolled in the Conroe public schools at age 10 when the Smiths moved to rural Sawdust Road in Spring. Peyton loved the country life. He rode his horse and shot at bottles down by the creek. He inherited his father’s considerable practical and mechanical skills, and was his dad’s right-hand man stringing barbed-wire fences, managing the family’s small cattle herd, and assisting with all kinds of projects. After graduating from Conroe High School in 1972, he worked a few years for a brilliant home-builder and beloved family friend, M.O. “Oz” Samford. Peyton began working part-time for “Oz” while still in high school, perfecting skills he used later to build his own home almost single-handedly - though he did have help from his brother Carlton. Peyton went to college in the mid-70’s and earned his bachelor’s degree from Abilene Christian in 1977. Given his background, an Elementary Education degree was surprising, but it was a natural fit for a gentle spirit gifted with a love of reading cultivated by his mother Carolyn and his maternal grandmother, Mabel Draper. Peyton taught briefly at Wilkerson Intermediate School in The Woodlands, and later at Houston ISD’s Lee and Jefferson Elementary schools. Then, in 1989, he applied to teach in Magnolia ISD - and he served for 27 years at Bear Branch Elementary. The teaching objective he imparted to his fresh-faced students on the first day of school was that they were there to “get literate.” Respect, gentleness and humor were the secret sauce in his classroom. Many Bear Branch parents requested that their child(ren) be assigned to Mr. Smith. As the years rolled on toward his retirement in 2016, some of his former students became Peyton’s fellow teachers. The Bear Branch family surrounded Peyton with overwhelming care and concern when he was stricken with liver cancer in 2007. Countless prayers were answered and he got a transplant. He kept teaching with ongoing support from students, parents and staff. He received his critical anti-rejection meds at school on Fridays, endured the side effects on the weekends, then returned on Mondays without complaint. Peyton had a simple and private home life. He built the aforementioned home on a quiet road south of Conroe, and it was beautiful. He had friendly, cooperative relationships with his close neighbors. After a post-retirement heart procedure, his friends up and down the road saw him walk four miles every single day, like clockwork. In his later years, he reconnected with his love of playing guitars and singing, but only for himself. His parents downsized from their Sawdust Road homestead to The Woodlands in 2014. Peyton devoted himself to visiting regularly and seeing to their needs. After the passing of his father, his visits were not only in support of his mother, but also her live-in angel caregiver, Estela Moreno. For five years, he shared companionship and meals while observing Estela’s patience, sunny outlook and selflessness. Recently, it dawned on Peyton that the kind of partner he hoped to find had been right there all along. For weeks prior to his passing, Estela and Peyton supported each other, reveled in each other’s company, and made plans for the future. Among his last words were, “If I go tomorrow, I’ll die a happy man.” His overflowing heart finally moved him to sing to Estela, dedicating “God Bless the Broken Road (That Led Me Back to You)” to her. Estela, nuestra hermana, the family offers our deepest thanks for the peace, happiness and joy that filled our brother’s last days. Peyton died July 19, 2026, and was preceded in death by his brother Kenny in 2011, his father Bogan in 2016, and his mother Carolyn in 2021. He is survived by his sisters, Janet (“Missy”) and Pam; his brother Carlton and his wife Diana; his brother Roger and his wife Cynthia; and nieces/nephews David Smith, Russell Holland, Michael Holland, Philip Holland, Chloe Escalante, Warren Smith, Wesley Smith and Zachary Smith.
