Robert Charles Earlougher Jr.

June 26, 1941-August 19, 2011 Son, Husband, Father, Brother Robert Charles Earlougher, Jr. (Bob), a native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, passed away in Houston, Texas, on August 19, 2011. His father, R. C. (Chuck) Earlougher, passed away in 2007, and his mother, Jeanne Storer Earlougher, passed away in 1995. After graduating from Central High School in Tulsa in 1959, he earned BS, MS and Ph.D. degrees in Petroleum Engineering from Stanford University. In 1966, he joined Marathon Oil Company as a Research Engineer and subsequently held a series of research positions at Marathon’s Petroleum Technology Center in Littleton, CO, and in 1977 was appointed manager of the Engineering Department. In 1970, he married Evelyn Robertson of Douglas, Wyoming, and their daughter, Katherine Anne, was born in Littleton in 1979. In subsequent years, he occupied management positions in Casper, Wyoming, and Bridgeport, Illinois. In 1988 he became Coordinating Manager for Production, U.K., then Manager, Brae Projects, for Marathon Oil U.K., and was based in London for nearly seven years. After returning to Houston he was named Vice President, International Production, until his retirement in January, 2000. Sometimes with his wife Evelyn, he traveled to Gabon, Russia, Japan and Sakhalin Island in that capacity. During his time with Marathon he also attended a 4-month MBA course at Harvard Business School. After his retirement, he and Evelyn enjoyed traveling to China, Peru, Egypt, and Guatemala, in addition to many locations in the U.S, including a trip down the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. In June of 2010 he, Evelyn, daughter, Katie, and son-in-law, Eddie, had a very memorable visit back to London. Dr. Earlougher was very active in the Society of Petroleum Engineers for over 35 years. He served on, or chaired, many SPE national-level committees and was a national director from 1980-1983, as well as a Distinguished Lecturer in 1985-1986. He was an officer in the Denver and London SPE sections. He was a Registered Professional Engineer in Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma and California. He authored 28 peer-reviewed publications and has 3 issued patents. He was the author of over 30 technical talks and papers. In 1977 he authored an SPE Monograph, “Advances in Well Test Analysis” which is still used as a text book in several universities. The recipient of many SPE Awards over the years, Mr. Earlougher was awarded an honorary membership in 1997. In 1996, he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering. He was a member of Sigma Xi, Scientific Research Society of America, Tau Beta Pi and Phi Beta Kappa. At the Society of Petroleum Engineers Annual Technical Conference in New Orleans in 2009, he was one of several recognized as “Legends of Production”. Bob is survived by his wife of 41 years, Evelyn, daughter Katie Konold and her husband, Eddie, and cherished grand daughter Charley Rose, of Boulder, Colorado, and two sisters, Jan Hawkins, and her husband, Jim, of San Diego, California, and Anne O’Connell Malinowski, and her husband, Gene, of Morristown, New Jersey, as well as several nieces and nephews, and five cousins. His main interest was anything associated with the Colorado mountains: downhill and cross-country skiing in winter and hiking and mountain climbing in the summer. By the mid-seventies he had scaled all of Colorado’s 14,000-foot peaks, most of them more than once. Later on, he scaled many of these peaks with Katie. He continued to ski every year in Colorado until 2010. Bob developed a debilitating disease, Lewybody Dementia, and his health declined in the last few years. For the last three years he spent part of his time at Autumn Grove Cottage in Spring, TX, where he received the most loving, capable, compassionate care. His family would like to acknowledge the contribution his caregivers at Autumn Grove Cottage made to his quality of life.
