Sabra Talkington

Sabra Rene Walker Talkington, beloved wife, mother, sister, friend, and prayer warrior, passed away peacefully at home on August 12th, 2025, in Spring, Texas, surrounded by her devoted husband and children. She was 68 years old. Born on February 12, 1957, in San Antonio, Texas, Sabra was the cherished daughter of Gertrude (Orndorff) and Alton Walker, and the youngest of three children. She grew up in a loving, faith-filled home alongside her older brothers, Alton (“Mickey”) and Tim, both of whom she admired deeply. Sabra’s early years were shaped by time spent in the kitchens of Baptist Temple Church and Trinity Baptist Church, where her mother worked as the church hostess. It was there that Sabra developed her lifelong love for cooking—especially baking—learning the joy of feeding others and the special role food plays in bringing people together. Her deep faith and vibrant spirit were evident from a young age. Sabra was active in her church youth group and found great joy in singing. She was a proud member of The Sound Foundation, a traveling youth musical group that performed throughout the U.S. and abroad. During high school summers, she toured to New York, Europe, and Mexico with the group, creating lasting memories and friendships she treasured throughout her life. She often spoke fondly of her childhood and teen years, making lifelong friends along the way. Their family home was a regular gathering place for friends, where her mom always had sweet tea and cookies ready. Sunday afternoons were spent with extended family at cookouts, followed by peaceful drives around town with her parents. Sabra loved having aunts, uncles, and many cousins living nearby. She stayed active in both church and school activities, loved cheering for her older brother Tim at basketball games, and proudly served as an officer of the Alamo Heights High School Pep (Cheer) Squad. After graduating from Alamo Heights High School (Go Mules!), Sabra attended Baylor University before transferring to Texas A&M University, where she truly found her place. At TAMU, she pledged Chi Omega and began dating the love of her life, David “Kim” Talkington. They married in December 1978, shortly after Sabra graduated early with a Bachelor of Science in Horticulture. Following their wedding, Sabra and David moved to Wichita Falls, where he began his career with Mobil Oil and where they started their family. Their first child, Bryan, was born in October 1979. The family then moved to Lubbock, where daughter Kate was born in January 1982. Just months later, they relocated to Spring, Texas, where their youngest son, Kyle, was born in July 1983—completing their family. They remained in Spring until the summer of 1988. Sabra adored the neighborhood families and the close-knit church community they found at Church of the Northwest. She built strong relationships that carried through every stage of life. Next, came four years in New Orleans. With all three children in school, Sabra poured her energy into volunteering with the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), including the beloved Harold Keller Rollers, and chauffeuring to youth sports practices, games, and tournaments. Her calendar was always full, but she believed in showing up, pitching in, and creating lasting memories—not just for her own children, but for all those around her. And she did it all with a smile. Leaving New Orleans was bittersweet. In the summer of 1992, the family returned to Spring and finally planted lasting roots. Sabra continued her days chauffeuring kids (and later grandkids) and volunteering at their schools. She built a home that felt truly alive. The back door was rarely locked, and friends knew they didn’t have to knock. The kitchen was always stocked with snacks, sweet tea was in the fridge, and no one ever left hungry. She created the kind of home kids loved to visit after school and on weekends—it was the hub for neighborhood gatherings, birthday parties, late-night talks, and sleepovers. There was usually a homemade dessert or a decorated cake from RJ Goodies nearby. She was often mistaken for an employee at her kids’ schools due to how involved she was. Sabra played a leading role in organizing and fundraising for each of her children's After Prom Extravaganza (APE)—a parent-planned, all-night post-prom event for over 1000+ students filled with games, prizes, and entertainment that rivaled any small-town fair. Despite frequent moves early in marriage, Sabra had a remarkable gift for making fast and lasting friendships. Every new town became home through her warmth, hospitality, and ability to bring people together. Many of those early friendships endured for decades, as Sabra stayed connected through long phone calls, handwritten cards, and later, Facebook. In her later years, Sabra found deep joy in caring for her beloved grandchildren—her “Nana’s angels.” She and David enjoyed traveling in their Casita trailer and spending time with their church community at Faithbridge, which became a meaningful part of their lives. Sabra volunteered her time, helped launch Martha’s Kitchen, and participated in SALT, a 55+ fellowship group. She loved picking up her grandkids from school and treating them to something special from Sonic. She never missed a school event or sporting game, always showing up as their loudest and proudest cheerleader. Sabra poured her heart into raising her children and building a life full of joy, connection, and creativity. She lived a life marked by kindness, generosity, and a deep love for others. She was the kind of neighbor who organized block parties, the kind of mom who made every birthday magical, and the kind of friend who always remembered your favorite dessert. Her kitchen was the heart of the home—where cookies, laughter, and life advice were always in generous supply. Her home was a haven of comfort and joy, where family and friends always felt welcome. Sabra is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, David; her children and their spouses—Bryan & Abby, Kate & Matt, and Kyle & Ashley; and her eight precious grandchildren—Grace, Madeline & Owen, Hudson & Case, Luke, Lily & Lainey. She also leaves behind a wide circle of extended family and dear friends who will miss her deeply and carry her spirit in their hearts. A celebration of Sabra’s life will be held on Thursday, September 25th, at 12:00 p.m. at Faithbridge Church in the Chapel.
