Van Grover Sluder

Van G. Sluder 1933 - 2017 Van Sluder, born in Leicester, North Carolina, passed away at the age of 84 at Spring Creek Village Assisted Living and Memory Care in Spring, Texas, on September 27, 2017. After a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease, Van passed peacefully, with his wife Carmen and stepson Ted at his side. He was preceded in death by Clyde and Fannie Sluder (parents), Glenna Rubino (sister), Clyde (Junior) Sluder (brother), and grandchildren Scott Stade, Melissa Robison and Adam Shaaban. Survived by wife Carmen (Santiago) Sluder, daughters Dorrie Beste (Frank) and Diana (Dee) Kotrash (Larry), Stepchildren Kim DeWitt, Dana Harris (Duane), Cheryl Roberts (Mike), Leslie Robison, Ted DeWitt, 8 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. He worked full-time at J.L. Hudson's (now Macy's) while attending classes to earn a commercial electrical license and building license, and then became a licensed independent homebuilder. Van retired in 1995 after working for Hudson's for 42 years. After his retirement, Van and Carmen enjoyed traveling and spent their summers in Michigan and winters in Texas for many years. They moved to Texas in 2010. Van will be always remembered as a kind and giving man, always helping anyone who needed anything, especially home repairs and remodeling. His greatest passion was helping others. He shared his love of gardening with his entire family. Later he became interested in the stock market and before long, he was a successful day-trader! According to Van's wishes, he will be cremated and his ashes will be held lovingly by his wife Carmen. Upon her passing, their ashes will be dispersed together in Seattle, Washington, in a beautiful park they visited several years ago. A Celebration of Life luncheon will be held for family and friends on October 28 at Clementine's at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association, www.alz.org, which advances research to end Alzheimer's and dementia while enhancing care for those living with the disease. The family wishes to thank the staff and caregivers at Spring Creek Village Memory Care for their kindness and loving care shown to Van during these past two years.
