Jack Warner Metzler

Jack-Jack, as he was affectionately known by his family and friends, died Sunday morning June 1, 2025, at Village Green Memory Care Facility. Lynn, his wife of 55 years, was with him. Mercifully, God answered his and our prayers that he would be released from the terrible grip of Dementia, and so that Sunday he was released. Jack was born on February 20, 1940 in Houston, TX as Tomball had no hospital. His parents, Henry Max and Grace Scherer Metzler brought him home to their farmhouse in Hufsmith. His loving parents were gifted in old fashioned, rural, living close-to-the-earth skills which they passed along to Jack. Skills that he never forgot and which he continued to use long after he left the hayfield. Throughout his growing up years he was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church. In high school, Jack was a class officer, and he excelled in Football. Number 35 linebacker, part of a winning team-Bi District Champs-1957. His letter jackets still hang in his closet – a sweet reminder of those youthful glory days. After high school graduation in 1958 he entered the University of Houston and graduated with a degree in the engineering field. He had a thirst for travel, so he boarded a boat to Europe where he worked and traveled for several months – an experience that he treasured. Jack began a career in the engineering field but took a brief sabbatical and taught Mechanical Drawing at Black Junior High in Houston where he met his wife, Lynn. They married in 1969 and settled in Tomball. Jack returned to work in the engineering field at Fluor Daniel, and Lynn continued teaching. Weekends were spent working on the farm and building spec houses; his dad right beside him. In between his engineering career, working on the farm, and building spec houses, Jack acquired his small plane pilot’s license. With his cousin he purchased a small Cessna which he flew out of Hooks airport. Loving every minute of this airy adventure and the freedom of not being tethered to the earth-just looking down from the skies. Ten years after Jack and Lynn were married, the gift was given, the blessing was bestowed – Lindsay, our precious treasure, was born. Several months later, satisfying his love of new places, he accepted a three year transfer to Calgary, Canada which he absolutely adored – the cold, the snow, the serious skiing, the breathtaking Canadian scenery – he was in his element! After returning to the states, his work with Fluor Daniel and other enterprises gave him the opportunity to travel abroad-Saudia Arabia, China, Hong Kong, Africa. Yes, he did love those experiences. After leaving this fast-paced world, Jack acquired his insurance license and opened his Farmers Insurance Agency in Tomball in an old home which he bought and refurbished – once again utilizing that legacy of practical skills handed down from his father. In 2002 Lindsay and Kris McKnight were married and settled in the old house where Jack grew up. Together, Jack and Kris breathed new life into that house. Jack was proud and impressed that Kris took so quickly and easily to that never-failing basic knowledge and he came to think of Kris as the son he never had. In time Lindsay and Kris blessed Jack and Lynn with 3 much-adored grandchildren – Roslynn, Genny, Warner, Jack Jack was a hands-on grandfather-changing diapers, rocking and reading stories, driving them around, attending their activities, and loving them with all his heart. When Jack retired from his insurance agency, he turned his attention to maintaining the beauty and integrity of Salem cemetery. He and his faithful friend and helper, Lonnie Osborn, worked tirelessly restoring so many of the ancient neglected, broken, half-buried headstones-many of which bore inscriptions in German. Jack was passionate about honoring those who were laid to rest those many years ago. Today Jack’s handiwork can be seen throughout the oldest part of the cemetery-old, old stones once again standing straight by Jack’s loving hand. Jack knew that his wife Lynn-who was born and raised in the deep south – Vicksburg, Mississippi-wanted to maintain her connection so Jack worked and worked in “patching” her 100 year old childhood home and later purchased a beautiful property and home in the woods just outside the Vicksburg city limits. Once again, his invaluable knowledge of construction and land management resulted in the creation of a beautiful and welcoming retreat for family and friends. That special place seemed like a little piece of paradise to everyone-especially the grandkids. Around 2018 Dementia began to rear its ugly head, and we all felt its impact. His double heart artery surgery in 2020 exacerbated the condition, and it was all downhill after that. When home care became impossible, in May of 2024 we took Jack to a memory care facility; it was miserable for him and heart rending for us…a dagger in our hearts when he asked over and over to come home. But now he IS home in Heaven; our hearts can now begin to heal; our tears-no longer hot and stinging-can now begin to flow through smiles and prayers of deep gratitude for an end to this nightmare, for release from this suffering. So now, my darling, all is well because of your goodness and because of the saving Grace of Jesus Christ. I love you forever with all my heart, Lynn. See you later, JackJack!
