A Celebration of Life for Michael Ray Lum, age 63, of Spring, Texas will be held Thursday, March 14, 2024, at Addison Funeral Home in Spring, Texas. Visitation will be 1:00pm – 2:30pm, followed by a remembrance service. Mike passed peacefully on March 9, 2024, after a courageous battle with brain cancer at his home in Spring. He was surrounded by his loving family. Mike was born October 25, 1960, in Henderson, Texas, to Ray and Jane Lum. Mike graduated from Port Neches-Groves High School in 1979, where he was a member of the basketball team until a knee injury took him out of the game. He later graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University in 1983 with a degree in Marketing. It was in college that he found a love and talent for officiating basketball. He was fortunate to find the love of his life, Susan, while in college. They both worked together at the family store, Milums, in Lufkin, Texas until they married in 1986. They decided a move to Beaumont, Texas, would be perfect to begin their marriage and family. Mike and Susan welcomed their first child, Brittany, in 1989, and then moved to Susan’s hometown of Houston. Shortly thereafter, they completed their family with a son, Christopher, in 1993. Mike had a passion for History that led him to return to school in 2006 where he secured a Master of Arts in Education in Secondary Teaching. He was proud to be completing his 18th year of teaching at Klein Collins High School this year. He maintained his season tickets to Klein Collins football games long after both kids graduated. He truly enjoyed educating the students and loved seeing them excel outside the classroom. His impact on them will be felt for many years to come. Mike’s kids shared his love of basketball. Watching them play was a highlight for him. While he was forced to hang up his whistle after 43 years due to the pandemic and his illness, he maintained his season tickets to the Houston Rockets. Mike loved to travel and he and his wife were fortunate to have cruised to many international and domestic destinations. Alaska in July was his favorite. Mike is preceded in death by his father, Ray Lum. He is survived by his wife, Susan, his children, Brittany and Chris, his daughter in law Fallon, his mother, Jane and her husband Gene, sister, Kathy and her husband Alan, along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Tunnels To Towers, Wounded Warriors, any pet rescue, or cancer research.
